Department of Environment, Science Technology & Climate Change

Setup

This department was set up on April 13, 2007 vide notification No. STE/Restructuring of ST,E,BT&PC (Vol-I)/2007 with an objectives to improve the effectiveness of environmental management, protect vulnerable ecosystems and enhance sustainability of development.

Vide Notification No. GAD(CC)-5-2/71 dated 15-10-2008 the name of the Department has been changed as Department of Environment, Science and Technology. Further vide Notification No. GAD-C-A(3)2/2019-Part-I dated May 01, 2023 name of the Department has again changed to Department of Environment, Science Technology and Climate Change.

Office of Department of Environment, Science Technology & Climate Change has been shifted to new building i.e. Paryavaran Bhawan, Near US Club in the month of July, 2014. New official address of the department is Department of Environment, Science Technology & Climate Change, Press Villa, Paryavaran Bhawan, US Club Shimla-1. ( Notification No. STE-F(11)-1/2013 dated 16/12/2014).

To conserve and improve the environment and natural resources of the State.

Mission

To plan, coordinate, promote and oversee the environment conservation and enhancement programmes through environmentally compatible management practices and technologies.

Objectives

Planning, coordinating, promoting and overseeing the environment, science & technology and pollution prevention, abatement and control activities and programmes for environment protection, conservation and enhancement by regulation, policy formulation, supervision and monitoring using innovative technologies. Strengthening of environment awareness, assessment, advocacy and action by facilitating organized collection, collation and dissemination of environmental information. Promote evaluation of environmental interventions through appraisal and assessment and benchmarking of standards. To facilitate monitoring & evaluation, decentralized planning & decision making through web based GIS applications. To deploy appropriate strategies for adaptation & mitigation of impacts of climate change including enhanced monitoring of glaciers & updation of glacial inventory.
